Creative Age Online

We’re beyond excited to work with St. Thomas Library and Middlesex County Libraries to offer online arts and cultural programming through the winter months.

Individuals aged 65+ are considered one of the fastest growing population groups in Canada, During the pandemic we participated in research activities to identify seniors’ barriers and facilitators to online participation in creative aging programs. Our pilot projects and instructors received high praise from both participants and community partners.

Starting January 5th, 2026 we’ll focus on livestream ZOOM session for older adults 55+ who live in smaller towns and rural areas in Southwestern Ontario. Our online programs teach new creative skills in highly social online workshop sessions.

Our Creative Age Network strategic direction 2026 to 2030 is raise awareness among older adults and care providers to the benefits of online arts programming. Seniors, especially those in rural areas, benefit from online arts programming during the winter months for several important reasons:

  1. Increased Access to Cultural and Creative Opportunities
Many rural areas lack local art centers, galleries, or creative classes. Online arts programming gives seniors access to performances, workshops, and art education that would otherwise be unavailable due to geographic isolation.
  2. Enhanced Social Connection and Mental Well-Being
Participating in virtual art communities helps reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation—common issues for seniors in rural areas. Engaging in creative activities with others, even online, supports mental health and fosters a sense of belonging.
  3. Flexible and Accessible Learning Environment
Online arts programs can be adapted to meet varying abilities, allowing seniors to learn at their own pace and from the comfort of home. This flexibility is especially valuable for those with mobility issues or limited transportation options.
